Daniel Ashley, GB Hatcheries Manager, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Poulters Training Award, recognising his outstanding career progression and ongoing commitment to developing others within the poultry industry.
The award was presented by the Master, Mr Paul Kelly, of the Worshipful Company of Poulters — one of the historic Livery Companies of the City of London. The Poulters Training Award celebrates individuals who have made a significant contribution to training and skills development within the poultry sector.
Daniel began his career in the poultry industry at the age of 18, working as a general hatchery operative. Alongside his role, he completed his Level 2 Apprenticeship and Work-based Diploma with Poultec Training, quickly demonstrating a strong work ethic and enthusiasm for learning.
He continued his development with Poultec, achieving his Level 3 Work-based Diploma in Agriculture as well as further qualifications in leadership and management. This commitment to training supported his rapid career progression — from Relief Team Leader at Aviagen, to Assistant Hatchery Manager at PD Hook Hatcheries in 2015, and then to Hatchery Manager just six months later, at the age of only 23.
In 2021, Daniel joined Pilgrim’s Europe as Hatchery Manager at the newly developed Newark Hatchery. In this role, he was responsible for the hatch of 2.4 million birds per week and for leading a team of 99 staff. In September 2025, he was promoted to GB Hatcheries Manager, taking on responsibility for the Ashbourne hatchery and the wider GB hatchery operation, including the redevelopment of the Ashbourne site.
A key reason for Daniel receiving the Poulters Poultry Training Award is his commitment to supporting and mentoring others. Drawing on his own experience as an apprentice, he actively encourages learners within the hatchery, supports their practical skills development, and ensures they are given the time and guidance needed to complete their training successfully. He also mentors Harper Adams placement students and regularly promotes careers in the poultry industry at events.
Daniel’s journey — from apprentice hatchery operative to senior manager — highlights the value of continuous training and development, and the important role apprenticeships play in building future talent within the sector.
The Poulters Poultry Training Award recognises individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to training, both in their own careers and in the development of others. Daniel’s achievements and dedication to nurturing the next generation of poultry professionals make him a worthy recipient of this year’s award.
